What You Need to Know About Australian Regulations for Handrails

Handrail Height

At least 865mm from stair nosings or ramp floors.

For stairway landings with winders (up to 500mm length), minimum height is 865mm.

Transition zones: Barriers may gradually increase from 865mm (stair/ramp) to 1000mm (landing).

Handrail is required on at least one side of the staircase or ramp.

If handrail is running close the wall, there must be minimum 50mm clearance between handrail and wall.

Commercial Space Requirements

Handrails in public/office/commercial spaces must run continuously from bottom to top of the stair and run on both sides of the stair.

Handrail for Fire Escape Stair must run continuous internal side but not compulsory on the external side (On the wall).

Minimum 1000mm spacing required between handrails. If distance exceeds 2000mm, another middle-rail must be installed to make stair narrower to be able access rail easily.
